10 things that are just better al fresco…

Written by Bawah Reserve | May 20, 2021 6:04:13 AM

Ah, the great outdoors! Even if you didn’t love fresh air and getting out in the open before the pandemic restrictions, you probably do now. And some things are actually more enjoyable outdoors. Here are a few of our fave alfresco activities at Bawah Reserve.

#1 Dining

Well, it had to be in the number one spot, didn’t it? Nothing can beat a dreamy castaway picnic or candlelit dinner under the stars.

#2 Cooking

From exciting barbecue ideas to gourmet creations from a pizza oven, outdoor cooking brings a new sense of fun and adventure. Even the non-cooks among us can sometimes discover their inner chef at an outdoor cook-fest!

#3 Exercising

The closure of gyms has reignited our love for a park workout, a beach run, or even a dip in the sea.  And that’s such good news! Exposure to plenty of natural light – especially in the morning – not only keeps Vitamin D levels up, but also regulates a natural circadian rhythm that balances energy, lifts mood, and ensures a good night’s sleep.

#4 Meditating

Proven to lower stress levels, improve focus, strengthen the immune system and promote longevity, the ancient practices of meditation and mindfulness are being discovered anew. Finding a tranquil spot – maybe on a sandy beach, or surrounded by birdsong in a leafy forest glade – helps clear your mind of distractions, and doing it outdoors is a powerful way to increase your connection to nature. While you’re at it, sound bathing can add a blissful new dimension of wellbeing to your meditation.

#5 Reading

Reading brings profound physical and mental benefits. Apart from increasing vocabulary, memory and analytical skills, it reduces stress and stimulates empathy – and even more so when you take it outside. For one thing, visual contrast is naturally far higher outdoors, and science shows that reading in a brightly lit environment stimulates your visual brain more effectively, allowing you to see the letters better and help your eyesight.
So grab your book and find a shady spot to curl up in – it’s good for you! If you need some island reading inspo, you might find it here.

#6 Thinking

We don’t just mean everyday stuff like planning what’s for dinner, compiling your child’s school timetable, or trying to remember when you last had the car serviced. We mean real thinking: original, out-of-the-box thinking that could change the world, or at least your world.
Unplugging from technology is the first step. And simply being in nature is shown to hugely
stimulate creativity and innovative thought.

#7 Showering

An outdoor shower most definitely adds to that tropical holiday feeling – and make it a cold
shower for additional resilience and longevity benefits. It’s all based on the science of
hormesis, or healthy stressors.   What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!

#8 Getting married

Couples all around the world are ditching those stuffy, enclosed venues in favour of outdoor
weddings in pristine environments.   Let nature be the backdrop for the most memorable day of your life!

#9 Working

In this new age of remote working, you really can set up an office anywhere. And with home-working having become the norm during the current pandemic, we’ve become incredibly inventive with our home offices. Taking your laptop – or even your desk –outside has more advantages than you might think!

#10 Relaxing

Those who holiday in a more natural environment and spend more time outdoors will return
home more relaxed.  One more bonus is that screen time is reduced – it’s the perfect digital detox.
