A quick guide to Batam

Written by Bawah Reserve | Aug 3, 2020 12:42:30 AM

Our amphibious planes depart daily at 9:30am from Batam, a small Indonesian island that is a
short 80-minute flight from Bawah Reserve. If you are not joining us on the escorted journey from Singapore and should arrive on Batam the day before your flight, here’s a quick guide on how to make the most of your time there.

Fast facts

  • Population: 1,236,399
  • Where it is: less than six kilometres South of Singapore
  • Claim to fame: it’s the largest city in the province of Riau Islands, Indonesia (the same
    province as Bawah Reserve)

Where to stay

Batam is more commonly known as an industrial hub than a tourist destination, unlike its
neighbouring island of Bintan. Therefore the options for hotels are limited, but these are the two best options if you need to stay overnight before/after a trip to Bawah Reserve.

1)Radisson Golf & Convention Center Batam

2)Batam Marriott Hotel Harbour Bay

Where to eat

1) Seafood:

Sei Enam Seafood Restaurant is a must-try spot for all seafood lovers.
Located in Batam Central, the restaurant offers a full menu at reasonable prices in a
pleasant indoor dining room spread across two levels.

Or for a more rustic seafood experience on the beach, check out Rezeki Seafood Restaurant.

2) Indonesian cuisine:

One of the most recommended places for local cuisines is Ikan Bakar Cianjur. Actually part of a chain across Indonesia, the restaurant is all about preserving Indonesia's culinary heritage. We recommend the gurame (fresh water fish) or the nasi liwet (tilapia steamed in banana leaf).

3) Western:

Anchor Café has great food and coffee and a sustainable mission.
Be sure to also check out the Riau Candles studio above, we sell these on Bawah! A fair
trade social enterprise by The Seed Basket, the company donates profits from every candle
purchase to charities that empower women and local families.

TOP TIP:

If you like to research your own food options, check Batam Food Blogger Batamliciouz
for street food options and local food recommendations.

Things to do

Spa Day

Indonesia is one of the best places in the world for spa treatments, and none better than at Tempat Senang.  Be pampered for half a day or go for a full day of bliss. Enjoy a delicious lunch on the terrace – we recommend the beer-can chicken – then a fabulous shop where you can stock up on beautiful tropical-scented products.
