Families and Bawah Reserve

Everything you need to know about families on Bawah

Bawah Reserve is a family friendly island however the very thing that makes this island so unique, brimming with marine life and colourful living corals – its remoteness – is what also makes this holiday destination less suitable for young kids.

For that reason there is a strict rule of no children under 5 years old at Bawah. If your child is five years old or above and you are an adventurous family who seeks the stunning unexplored surrounds of this part of Indonesia – then we can’t wait to welcome you to the barefoot sunny island! Before you book please do consider the following to help with planning your trip.

What’s Here for Kids?

Bawah Reserve is a nature lover’s playground – bring your binoculars and spot the many birds and butterflies. Go snorkelling and see how many different types of fish and corals you can see! There’s an abundance of family friendly outdoor activities to keep kids busy–from simply playing on the beach near the shallow peaceful waves to checking out how veggies grow in our garden.

Swimming or snorkelling in the clear blue sea (there are guided snorkeling tours too), kayaking, sailing, diving (from 16 years old), cooking classes (best for teens), tennis and joining mum and dad in the guided forest walks.

Accommodation

Which suite is best for your family’s needs?

We now have a number of options for families to choose from.

To help you choose the best accommodation for you and your family we have listed out all the family friendly options below:

Two-bedroom Pool Villa (also available as a Three-bed option)

Our two-bedroom Pool Villas (we have 2 of these) are a home-away-from-home with two beach suites, a separate living & dining pavilion for entertaining your friends and family and a private plunge pool to cool off from the tropical heat. The lounge and dining areas have been designed to complement the panoramic views, perfect for a private sunrise breakfast or sunset supper experience. Enjoy the peaceful privacy, gentle breezes and sea views from a hideaway terrace. Click here to view

Please note: the tented beach suites are around 50m apart and not suitable for younger children alone, please do consider the floor plan:

Two-bedroom Infinity Pool Villa (also available as a Three-bed option)

Our two-bedroom Infinity Pool Villas comprise two stand-alone beach suites connected with a separate covered living and dining pavilion and a private infinity-edge pool offering spectacular views over the lagoon. Perfect for two couples travelling together, this villa offers extra space to lounge or dine together while enjoying privacy in separate (70m2) suites. The villa has direct access to the lagoon, perfect for a mid-afternoon snorkel or swim. Alfresco breakfast looking out over the pool will quickly become a favourite spot. Click here to view.

Two-Bedroom Treehouse Lodge

The Two-bedroom Treehouse Lodge is accessed by 50 steps up into the jungle overlooking the canopy. Peaceful and private, this treetop lodge offers gentle breezes and partial sea views – although the beach is just a few minutes walk down 50 hand-cut stone steps. There are two en-suite bedrooms, a large open plan living and dining area and a full-length front-facing outdoor balcony accessed from sliding doors in the living room. The lodge offers panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows that give a sense of being immersed in nature and a direct private pathway to Tree Tops restaurant.

Additional Beds

Tented Beach Suites and Overwater Bungalows comprise of a king bed and bathroom with a balcony to sit and read or enjoy an afternoon drink. We can add 1 single bed to any suite ($600USD additional per night). This extra bed would fit right up against the king bed with no gap in between so that all beds are snug under the mosquito netting and aircon. If you are a family of 2 adults and 1-2 smaller kids and are happy to sleep with this configuration  you will be charged:

Single Bed (5 years - 12 years) $450 per child, per night

Single Bed (12 years +) $600, per child per night

If you have older teens and need your space the option is to book out two suites. Bear in mind that there is at least a 30-metre space with bush and trees between suites so they are not connected, making this configuration unsuitable for younger children (unless one adult and one child can sleep in each suite).

Health and Safety

As we mentioned, Bawah is in a remote part of the world accessible by seaplane (one/two daily flights in, one/two daily flights out at pre-set times ). For this reason we do not allow babies and toddlers.

If you are here with kids and if there is a problem – rest assured that there is a Dr on site however the nearest hospital is at least 3 hrs away.

Bawah is all about luxe sustainable island living. The natural environment is tropical and rugged – there are bugs and beautiful butterflies, forested hills (it’s a reserve after all!), and rocky terrain inland. The pathways connecting the overwater bungalows have minimal fencing and there are a fair few steps up to the main restaurant where breakfast and dinner is served, as such strollers cannot be accommodated on the island.

If you have any questions we haven’t answered on bringing your children or need help deciding which accommodation will be best for you and your kids– please email us: reservations@bawahreserve.com
