How to cope with travel anxiety

How to cope with travel anxiety and why a private island getaway could be just what the doctor ordered

An estimated 275 million people worldwide suffer from anxiety disorders. That's around 4% of
the global population. And this number is estimated to have grown by around 25% as a consequence of the global pandemic. If you’re not suffering from anxiety yourself, it’s likely that you know someone who is!

Can’t travel because of anxiety?

Travel fears are a common anxiety trigger. It’s not unusual to be anxious before travelling, and even more so considering the impact of recent events on the world of travel. While our first advice would always be to seek professional support – especially for severe anxiety – there are simple things you can do to calm your fears and get you back to travelling happily again. So, here are our ideas to help you get over travel anxiety. After all, a relaxing vacation might be just what your head needs!

How to cope with travel anxiety, and why a private island getaway could be just what the doctor ordered!

1. Destination

Travel and uncertainty go hand in hand, so do research your options carefully and choose your
destination wisely. According to CNN Traveler, travel involves being willing to expose yourself
to new situations and to be able to tolerate some uncertainty because you don’t know exactly
how it’s going to go.

Selecting a calm and peaceful destination may help to minimise any travel anxiety – at least you
know you can chill out when you get there! Conversely, a busy city getaway with a hectic
itinerary might further fuel your anxiety. But if that’s what you’re after, be sure to research your
destination meticulously, and familiarise yourself with the location. That way, you’ll avoid
unnecessarily stressful surprises.

Outside in nature

Medical News Today put exercise and meditation at the top of its list of natural remedies for
stress and anxiety.
Going away gives you time for both of these healthful activities – and exercising or meditating
outdoors is even better for you.  So it helps if your chosen location has the perfect spaces for these activities!

Brain-imaging research has shown that proximity to water is strongly linked to your brain releasing feel-good hormones, including dopamine and oxytocin.

Not only is the beach good for mental health, but it improves overall wellbeing. That’s because
so-called blue spaces – oceans, lakes, and even swimming pools – are known to boost overall mood. What’s more, exposure to sunshine and the ocean air does us untold good.

They say that “surf therapy” – getting in the waves and moving around – harnesses the benefits of increased mindfulness, apart from physical activity.

2. Getting there

Fear of flying can be a big one, but it can be overcome. Consider medication like lorazepam – either prescription or over-the-counter to help with panic symptoms for extreme anxiety –or learn relaxation techniques. Remember that more than 45,000 flights take off every single day – and that very, very few of them make the headlines.

3. Solo or with company?

For some people, allowing yourself some “me time”  away from your
everyday routine is an effective antidote to anxiety. For others, the very idea of travelling solo triggers anxiety and fear. We suggest following your instincts. After all, who better than you to decide what you need?
“If you have anxiety about travelling alone, bring a travel buddy. If you choose to travel with
someone else, there are plenty of partner or group activities to enjoy.”

4. Retreats

You might even want to make mental health the main focus of your holiday. If so, there are plenty of retreats for anxiety and depression, yoga retreats, or simply general well-being retreats,
where you can focus on therapeutic relaxation practices while learning more about yourself.

5. Activities

It’s said that “an idle mind is the devil’s playing ground”, so the busier you are the less time you
have to think about being anxious!
Ideally, you should be able to be as active or as chilled as you like, depending on your mood and
proclivities. This means a location that has a variety of both energetic and low-key activities to
keep you occupied with enjoyable distractions.

6. Leave your house in good order

A holiday will not be a holiday if you are worried about your house, your dog, your plants and so
on. Make plans and backup plans to ensure they’re all well looked after in your absence so that
you can properly relax and enjoy your time away.
