What type of Pinterest traveller are you?

Far from the pandemic dampening our enthusiasm for globe-trotting, travel searches on Pinterest surged by 60% over 2019. That’s huge!

Travel optimism is riding high, and the people at Pinterest have listed eight new categories of travel pinners raring to go.

“Coming out of COVID, you’ll also see new types of travelers emerge.  Based on our data, we’ve identified eight travel personas: Bucket Listers, Culture Chasers, Digital Nomads, Foodie Travelers, Memory Makers, Outdoor Junkies, Rural Tourists, and Weekend Travelers.” Pinterest

Which type of Pinterest traveler are you?

Do you identify strongly with just one of these eight personas? Or maybe several of them
resonate with you? Join us as we share these exciting Pinterest findings blended with a pinch of “Bawah”-spiration for all types of traveler to enjoy!

Rural Tourists

Are you instinctively drawn to the peacefulness of rural surroundings? Or it is that these long months confined to a concrete jungle have sparked an irresistible urge to get away from it all? When you simply have to escape the crowds, a rural getaway is the only way to go.  Rural Tourists like you seek places with oodles of space to spread out.

Pinterest saw an 80% increase in searches for rural travel topics in 2020 vs. 2019.

Outdoor Junkies

Staying in has made people crave fresh air, sunshine and the natural wonders of the great outdoors, and that’s not surprising. Restrictions have unleashed a massive wanderlust for outdoor adventures like hiking, backpacking, and fishing, be it close to home or in rare and far-flung destinations all over the world.

Pinterest saw a 30% increase in searches related to hiking in 2020 vs. 2019.

Digital Nomads

Say hello to a new kind of road warrior. For many, the traditional workplace has either changed irrevocably or disappeared completely. Greater flexibility in the career zone and an increasingly joined-up world mean more people taking their working lives on the road.

Pinterest saw a 50% increase in searches related to digital nomadism in 2020 vs. 2019.

Bucket Listers

Let’s face it: there are only so many places a traveler can get to in a single lifetime. Instead of being overwhelmed by the infinity of options, Bucket Listers make lists of things they want to see or experience before a certain age or before they die. From swimming with dolphins or sharks to going on a seaplane or scuba diving in a remote island paradise – tick, tick, tick.

Culture Chasers

Seven stops in seven days is not this travel persona’s style. Skimming the surface simply won’t cut it. Instead, you thirst for immersion in a community’s way of life – its ideas, beliefs, customs, and social practices. Through exploring a culture’s art, dance, language, architecture, religious and culinary traditions, you delve deep to really discover the soul of your destination.

Foodie Travellers

Traveling the world means opportunities to tickle the tastebuds and discover new ingredients and recipes to take home and share with family and friends. Whether you’re getting the authentic experience at a homestay, foraging for exotic fruit or choosing fresh-caught fish at a local market, or creating delicious island cuisine in a cookery class with the ocean breeze in your nostrils, the focus of this travel experience is on the food.

Memory Makers

Making forever memories is the goal here. Memory Makers seek special moments to savour
by looking for uplifting experiences that will live in their hearts and minds for the rest of their lives. For you it might be an evocative sunset cruise on a local fishing boat, encountering a turtle on a pristine coral reef – or even making or renewing your marriage vows on an idyllic tropical beach.

Weekend Travelers

Work hard, play hard. Short-haul travel is a great way to rejuvenate body and mind – especially in a retreat that offers not only adventure activities but also spa treatments, forest bathing, meditation, and other restorative experiences. So, pack that weekend bag, maybe tack on another precious day or two if you can wangle it (see Digital Nomads) and maximise the weekend by getting away from it all.
