Written by Bawah Reserve | Sep 7, 2020 6:34:05 AM

Not only is stand up paddle boarding (SUP) a lot of fun and a fab way to explore the
lagoons around Bawah Reserve, it also has a number of added health benefits

So, if you have always wanted to try stand up paddle boarding but were worried about how to
get started – worry no more! We have reached out to the world’s top SUP pro’s to give us
their awesome tips for beginners so you can SUP like a pro from day one!

1) Getting started

Before you hit the water spend some time learning online

Watch plenty of instructional videos to support a good technique and improve confidence when paddling for the first time. See our website, youtube and Instagram for some good videos for beginners” @supboardermag www.supboardermag.com

2) Finding your Balance

How to get on the board and stay on!

hen getting onto a SUP be patient, start on your knees with your paddle out to the side to help you balance. Start paddling on your knees to get a bit of motion before gradually stepping up to your feet. It may take a few tries to start but you’ll be a pro in no time. And most of all get out on the water, have fun and enjoy the experience.”

3) Planning

Check the conditions – There’s nothing worse than ending up paddling against the
tide and winds – you will tire yourself out very quickly. Let the wind work for you! The wind socks in the lagoon will give you a good idea of the wind direction.

“As ocean enthusiasts always check the wind direction and tides before you paddle
out.” Stand Up Magazine. @standupmagazin https://standupmagazin.com/de/

4) Technique

Master the right technique from the start and you will start to see the benefits.

“Stand Up Paddling is one of the most complete sports that exists – co-ordination ,
balance, strength and endurance. Keep in mind to pull yourself to the paddle don’t
pull the paddle to you. Like this you will have a better technique from the start and
you will train your whole body.” @SonniHöenscheid, professional SUP paddler 7 X
SUP World Champion, 6 X SUP European champion, 12 x German surfing
champion.

5) Direction

There’s nothing worse than paddling hard and going around in circles.

“To paddle in a straight line, keep your paddle next to the rail of the board during the entirety of your stroke. To turn, start your paddle next to the rail of your board and sweep away from the rail.” James Casey – Ocean Athlete, M20 SUP Champ
2020, 5 x Australian champion @james_casey

6) Positioning

Use your body to aid your technique.

“Always try to have your paddle vertical at the catch. Not very natural at the beginning. You will need to practice. But it’s very important if you want to have a straight stroke. Rotate your hips at the same time. It will help you to have the paddle vertical and to have more power in your stroke.” I Love Sup @ilovesup.me and Seychelle world class athlete and coach @seychellesup

7) Have Fun

Don’t take yourself too seriously!

“The more you relax the more you will enjoy your time on the board and the more
your body will naturally support you.”
