2022 Wellbeing Trends

full moon bathing - wellbeing trends 2022

At the start of each new year, the media loves to talk about the next big thing in well-being.

We feel that most of the biggest health trends for 2022 are actually not that new, but more an evolution of trends we’ve seen developing during 2021 –and we have covered many of them in previous blogs:

There are, however, a few interesting new well-being kids on the block that are worth looking into. Here are the top 8 wellbeing trends the media are excited about right now.

1. Full Moon Bathing

2. Health Span

3. Post Traumatic Thriving

4. Reducetarians, Veggievores, and Sustainatarians

5. The Climatic Diet

6. Adaptogenic Drinks

7. Mindful Drinking - The Sober Curious

8. Psychedelics

1. Full Moon Bathing

Moving on from the relaxing benefits of stargazing [link to stargazing blog], why not discover
full moon bathing? (Don’t worry, there is no howling involved!) Here are two ways to do this:

1) Either sit outside under the full moon, soaking up its rays
or
2) Take a bath doing the “full moon bath ritual”

Full moon bath benefits include improved sleep, energy, and balance. Here’s
the new moon schedule for 2022, so schedule your full moon bathing sessions accordingly:

January 17, February 16, March 18, April 16, May 16, June 14, July 13, August
12, September 10, October 9, November 8, December 8

2. Health Span

All wellbeing trends are ultimately about improving health and longevity. For some, longevity is
a daily focus. However, not everyone has equal access to resources and high-tech gadgets
such as sleep and fitness trackers, or specialised nutrition and supplements.

Fear not – if you are interested in increasing your health span (staying happy and healthy for as long as possible), 2022 is all about making this more affordable to all.

3. Post-traumatic thriving

In a world where terrible events, accidents, and natural disasters are an unavoidable reality, trauma has a significant impact on mental health. Many of those affected can be helped by the power of resilience to overcome even significant trauma, the idea being that we can use these experiences to move forward and thrive.

“When trauma hits, your most significant decision will be to dive, survive, or thrive.” Randall Bell

4. Reducetarians, Veggievores & Sustainatarians

Last year we talked about flexitarianism – a diet centred on plant foods with the occasional inclusion of animal products. In 2022 we can expect to see more dietary variations around the reduction of meat and dairy or diets with more focus on the sustainable and ethical sourcing of animal products in particular.

Here is a definition of the most recent additions according to the Urban Dictionary:

Reducetarian: Someone who reduces their meat consumption.

Veggievore: An individual who is not a vegetarian and who does eat meat, but who aspires to
ensuring he or she does not eat meat or dairy products which could be considered as harmful to
the environment or cause unnecessary suffering to animals.

Sustainatarian: A person who eats a mostly plant-based diet with occasional sustainable meat,
meaning that it is locally and humanely raised.

And if you would like to know more about how to become a reducetarian  or to learn more about the meaning of reducetarian, then do check out the reducetarian foundation, or watch the documentary meat me halfway.

5. The Climatarian Diet

On a similar trend is the climatarian diet – choosing what you eat based on minimising carbon footprint. Simple choices while food shopping can have a huge impact on the environment, and –
depending on where you live – selecting produce that has been grown or reared in your own country
may be easier than you think.
In addition, the climatarian focuses on reducing waste by buying no more than needed and making the most of leftovers.

6. Adaptogenic Drinks

It’s not just food that’s high on the wellbeing trends list for 2022. Drinks are also very in! Especially drinks containing adaptogenic substances – natural herbs or roots that can help the body adapt to stress by balancing our hormones.

Up to 15 natural adaptogens have been identified, including ashwagandha, cordyceps, eleuthero, ginseng, holy basil, licorice, rhodiola, schisandra, shilajit, turmeric, and maca.

Keen on trying an adaptogenic drink recipe? Here’s our own recipe for jamu, the Indonesian anti-inflammatory elixir:

7. Mindful Drinking or Sober Curious

Taking “dry January”  to the next level, the mindful drinking or sober curious movement is all
about your own definition of "sober",  choosing if and when to have alcohol, making it a conscious decision for health or mental wellbeing. Instead of committing to a clear-cut absolute – either “I drink” or “I don’t drink” – we can opt to have a healthy relationship with alcohol, drinking moderately when we
want to, but also being OK with saying no, thank you.

And if you don't want alcohol but fancy a nice drink why not try a seltzer, if that’s what you feel like?

8. Psychedelics

Yes, that’s right! The use of hallucinogenic drugs to assist psychotherapy treatment is being
explored in multiple clinical trials right now and is showing enormous potential. Watch this
space!
“Psychedelic therapy uses psychedelic plant compounds that can induce hallucinations, such as
LSD and psilocybin from ‘magic’ mushrooms, to treat mental health issues.” Medical News Today

Remember that your personal well-being is not a trend – it’s your life! Experiment with what’s
out there, find what works for you, and go for it.
