Coffee Trends: 10 different ways to get your caffeine fix

Coffee Trends - 10 different ways to get your caffeine fix

Coffee has long been en vogue – and the ever-complicated orders at Starbucks are proof of how far this simple hot drink has evolved over the last few years.  The most complicated order to date?

“Venti, half-whole milk, one quarter 1%, one-quarter non-fat, extra hot, split quad shots (1 1/2 shots decaf, 2 1/2 shots regular), no foam latte, with whip, 2packets of Splenda, 1 sugar in the raw, a touch of vanilla syrup and 3 short sprinkles of cinnamon”!" Starbucks

But the trend is not slowing down. 2021 is proving to be as caffeine-fueled as ever, and we are now well into what is known as the “third wave” of coffee, where “respect is given to high-quality speciality roasts, hyper-specific beans, innovative brewing methods and origin information that combines with environmental, ethical and social credentials.” Just Drinks

Just this year alone Tiktok has uncovered four new coffee trends:  Dalgona whipped coffee, Proffee, Coffee Jelly, and the Dirty Coffee!

 - Dalgona Whipped Coffee

Made globally popular by Hannah Cho  in her TikTok video that was viewed over 15 million times!!

 - Proffee

A mixture of protein shake with coffee. There are many recipes on TikTok -  some include getting a Starbucks espresso in a large cup of ice and pouring in a flavoured protein shake!

 - Coffee Jelly

Literally coffee flavoured jelly cubes added to a cold latte!

 - Dirty Coffee

Dirty coffee  consists of cold milk (sometimes a mix of milk and cream) with a dark espresso shot or ristretto poured over it. The reaction of the two together creates this messy/dirty coffee-milk art!

And here are 10 more of the latest coffee trends to brighten up your morning brew.

1) Manual roasting and brewing

One of the popular activities at Bawah Reserve is learning to make the perfect cup of coffee.  Starting from choosing the beans, roasting them yourself with direct contact, hot air or radiation, then grinding the beans, and finally choosing your brewing method - we often use a V60 coffee dripper to slowly drip the coffee through filter paper for a more flavoursome cup or for an even more concentrated drink you can use the Moka pot.

2) Bulletproof coffee

Dave Asprey’s bulletproof diet has become hugely popular, particularly with those on intermittent fasting diets. The blend of quality fats (butter or ghee) and high-quality coffee is keto-friendly and is said to help you to lose weight and increase energy levels. It’s actually very simple to make – check out Dave’s guide here or watch the video above.

3) Coffee Subscriptions

With more and more of us making our own coffee at home – either with a machine or a French press – subscriptions are a great way to get a good supply of high-quality beans to your door. Indonesia coffee beans offer subscriptions and are similar to the beans we use at Bawah.

4) Snapchilled coffee

Moving the world on from cold brew, snap chilled coffee from the Elemental Beverage Co. harnesses the power of science to chill hot coffee in seconds, without ice or chemicals. As the ready-to-drink market is booming and cans are becoming very popular, this is one to watch!

5) Healthy coffee

One of the healthier trends on the coffee market is mushroom coffee. Without a distinct mushroom taste, functional mushrooms are mixed with ground coffee beans for a smooth flavour and a drink that is high in antioxidants and other compounds. Studies have suggested these mushrooms can enhance mental focus, lower anxiety, and support the adrenal glands.

Also, look out for chicory coffee - also gaining in popularity.

6) Coffee Tourism

Coffee-based online workshops are very popular now, and when travel is permitted field-to-fork style “get your hands dirty” trips are expected to follow.

7) Sustainability

Not a new trend, sustainable coffee continues to be important to coffee lovers. Organic, fair trade and Rainforest Alliance are all good quality signs to look out for. But why not go one step further by avoiding the brands and buying directly from the farm. A great example of this in Indonesia is Bright Coffee an NGO working to help small coffee farmers form cooperatives to sell their beans.

8) Coffee beyond the cup

Whole Foods predict that consumers will get their coffee in more ways, including coffee-flavored bars and granolas, smoothie boosters, alcohol-based drinks, and even coffee yogurt.

9) Coffee Keto cups

If you prefer to eat your caffeine rather than drink it, then these coffee keto cups – which are all the rage on the wellbeing scene – are for you. Each cup has cacao on the outside and lightly sweetened coconut butter with MCT oil and coffee on the inside. It’s like a bulletproof coffee crossed with a Reece's cup!

10) Coffee blender bombs

These nutrient-rich balls can be added in to your smoothie. Make your own  or buy them already made.
