There was a time when holidays naturally created distance from our devices. Today, our phones have become our office, our camera, our map, our news source, our entertainment and our connection to family and friends. While technology has made life easier in countless ways, it has also made it increasingly difficult to truly switch off.
Even when we're surrounded by extraordinary places, many of us are only half present—replying to texts between breakfast and the beach, checking messages during sunset, or scrolling through social media before bed.
At Bawah Reserve, we believe some of life's most meaningful moments happen when we disconnect from our screens and reconnect with ourselves, nature and the people around us.
That's why you'll find no televisions in our suites, and why we gently encourage guests to leave their phones behind while exploring our six private islands. It's not about eliminating technology—it's about creating space for something far more valuable: presence.
Our brains were never designed to process a constant stream of notifications, emails, breaking news and social media updates.
According to a recent Deloitte survey, we average three hours and 15 minutes a day on our
phones, and most people check their phones a staggering 58 times a day.
By the way, where is your phone now? Are you reading from it or is it right next to you?
Research continues to show that excessive screen time can contribute to increased stress, reduced attention spans, poorer sleep quality and difficulty truly relaxing. Even short interruptions from our phones can disrupt concentration and make it harder to be fully engaged in the moment.
Many of us instinctively reach for our phones dozens of times each day without even realising it. Often, we unlock them with a specific purpose—only to find ourselves twenty minutes later reading headlines, checking messages or scrolling through social media, having forgotten what we originally intended to do.
A digital detox isn't about rejecting technology. It's about developing a healthier relationship with it.
One of the greatest luxuries today isn't fast Wi-Fi or endless entertainment—it's uninterrupted time.
Imagine beginning your morning with sunrise yoga overlooking the ocean instead of checking overnight emails. Spending an afternoon snorkelling vibrant coral reefs rather than watching someone else's adventures online. Listening to birdsong in the rainforest instead of notification alerts.
At Bawah Reserve, guests often tell us that after just a day or two they notice something remarkable. Conversations become longer. Meals become slower. Sleep becomes deeper. They read books they haven't had time to open for months, enjoy a spa treatment surrounded by nature, or simply sit quietly on the beach watching the changing colours of the sea.
Many arrive feeling busy. Most leave feeling restored.
Whether you're at home or planning your next escape, small changes can make a big difference.
When your phone is out of sight, you're far less likely to reach for it. Simply turning it over removes the visual temptation of every notification.
Not every app deserves your immediate attention. Keep calls and important messages enabled, but silence the rest. You'll be surprised how much calmer your day feels.
Replace your phone with a traditional alarm clock. Avoiding screens before bed can improve both the quality of your sleep and how rested you feel the next morning.
Choose one or two parts of your day that are completely device-free—perhaps breakfast, dinner, your morning coffee or an evening walk. Protect these moments.
Remove apps that no longer add value or encourage endless scrolling. If you still want to stay informed, access them intentionally through your browser rather than constantly through notifications.
One of the most effective ways to reduce screen time is simply to replace it with something more rewarding. Go for a walk, swim in the ocean, explore a forest trail or watch a sunset without feeling the need to photograph every moment.
Most smartphones now include built-in Digital Wellbeing or Screen Time reports. Reviewing your usage each week can be surprisingly eye-opening and help you build healthier habits over time. You can also get the help of apps like Mute to set digital detox goals.
A digital detox doesn't have to mean disappearing from the world. It simply means choosing, even briefly, to be fully present in it.
Whether you're spending an afternoon away from your phone at home or escaping to a remote island, giving yourself permission to disconnect can improve your sleep, reduce stress, deepen your relationships and remind you of what truly deserves your attention.
