Nature in the home - 10 ideas to make your home a green sanctuary.

With 100 hectares of tropical forest to explore at Bawah Reserve we appreciate the important role nature and greenery play for overall well-being. Being outdoors in the fresh air surrounded by flora and fauna is good for mind and body.

For many parts of the world,  during these dreary, cold times of year,  getting out in nature can be a challenge and with limited holidays to warmer climates we are all missing our escapes.

But did you know having plants in the home helps to clean the air, has proven to decrease stress levels and can also increase your productivity:

 - NASA recently revealed studies that show how houseplants can remove up to 87% of air toxins in 24 hours.

 - The calming effects calculated during another study from the American Society for Horticultural Science showed that anxiety decreased significantly  in offices with plants. The staff proved to be happier and more productive than in lean designs stripped of greenery.

With our homes becoming work spaces, gyms, and schools now is the perfect time to “green” up your home, why not consider bringing nature and plants indoors into your home or office to create your very own verdant escape.  The good news is that you don’t need to have a green thumb nor do you need to have a lot of space to add greenery. From terrariums to tropical trees, mini cactus to moss wall art – we have created a Pinterest board  with 10 amazing ideas to help achieve your perfect indoor green sanctuary!

1) Terrariums

Around for almost two hundred years terraria is any sealable glass container containing soil and plants that can be open or closed. These decorative mini gardens are pretty and low maintenance. You can easily make one yourself or purchase one ready made at a garden shop.

2) Hanging Plants

A terrific way to add greenery without using up valuable floor space, there are so many options for hanging plants. These macramé style hangers are a nice sustainable and aesthetic option. On Bawah we up-cycle fishing nets we find in the sea for our hanging plants.

3) Herbs

Having fresh herbs on hand is an excellent way to add seasoning to your cooking. Check out this fantastic way to re-use old milk containers to grow herbs indoors. Sustainability and permaculture combined.

4) Fruit

You may be surprised to learn that you can grow fruit in your home and it won’t take up a lot of space. How satisfying to add your home grown lemon to your seltzer!

5) Bathrooms

With warmth and moisture your bathroom is often the ideal spot for indoor plants. Create a tropical oasis to enjoy during your next relaxing bath.

6) Small Spaces

Want to add a dash of green but don’t have a lot of space? There are some very cute mini cactus that are perfect for the smaller home and easy to maintain. Add these to a window ledge or as a small trio on your desk.

7) Trees

Want to live with that indoor/outdoor feeling in your home? Then don’t just stop at plants, consider a potted tree for your living room. You can even decorate your living tree during the holidays -bonus. -

8) Moss Art

Modern and sustainable wall art. These moss panels can last up to 25 years with regular water and a good amount of light. We love the impressive vertical patterns.

9) Jungle

We admire those indoor gardening enthusiasts who have let nature dominate their homes. If you want your own indoor jungle, use these images as inspiration. -

10) Tropical Wall Art

Want to be enveloped in greenery without the maintenance? Consider using tropical wall art or wall paper to bring the tropics into your home. If you are more artistic you can paint your favourite flowers as a ceiling border to brighten your day.

We would love to see your lush spaces please share with us how you bring greenery into
your home!
